It should be obvious, looking at this table, that the suspended second and suspended fourth chords are not all independent. There are twelve keys, and two suspended chords per key, which gives 24 chords, in theory. Actually only twelve are independent. There are five which have no flats or sharps (so they are in the key of C), and seven others. |

The first five use the following notes: Asus2 uses A - B - E (I will call this Form 1); the chord Dsus2 uses A - D - E (I will call this Form 2); the chord Dsus4 uses A - D - G (I will call this Form 3); the chord Csus2 uses C - D - G (I will call this Form 4); and the chord Csus4 uses C - F - G (I will call this Form 5).
The next seven are: Fsus4 uses C - F - Bb (this is Form 6); the chord Bsus4 uses B - E - Gb (this is Form 7); the chord Bsus2 uses B - Db - Gb (this is Form 8); the chord Bbsus4 uses F - Bb - Eb (this is Form 9); the chord Dbsus2 uses Ab - Db - Eb (this is Form 10); the chord Dbsus4 uses Ab - Db - Gb (this is Form 11); and the chord Ebsus4 uses Eb - Ab - Bb (this is Form 12). Table 6 lists all the fifth, suspended second, and suspended fourth chords by key. It also lists the twelve independent forms. For example, in the Key of A, the chord A5 uses the notes A - E, the chord Asus2 uses the notes A - B - E (which is Form 1), and the chord Asus4 uses the notes A - D - E (which is Form 2). Form 1 also is used in Esus4 (the notes E - A - B are the same as A - B - E, just in a different order). So the background color for Asus2 is the same as that for Esus4. Similarly, Form 2 is used in Dsus2 (the notes D - E - A are the same as A - D - E, just in a different order). And the background color for Asus4 is the same as that for Dsus2. Table 6A lists the twelve forms, and identifies which suspended fourth and suspended chords correspond to each form. So for Form 1, we see that it corresponds to Asus2 and Esus4, the same as in Table 6. And for Form 2, we see that it corresponds to Dsus2 and Asus4, the same as in Table 6. |
